This research-based, student-powered global nonprofit sought to attract involvement from attendees of Harvard and MIT with a location in Harvard Square. Leadership required a coworking-style office environment to bring together interdisciplinary researchers, nonprofit leaders, and ambitious students to reflect the nonprofit’s stated mission to do good for the world using evidence-based strategies. The space would have to embody the mission in purpose and principle, supporting the culture and activity within. The location at 20 Brattle Street is three historic buildings that have been married together, presenting additional challenges for designing the 16,000-square-foot space. The project team had to coordinate closely among themselves and with many consultants (audiovisual, lighting, acoustics, etc.) to address engineering and infrastructure issues that would arise. The program includes a large café that doubles as an event space, various meeting rooms with non-traditional furnishings, a podcast studio, a wellness/meditation room, and other helpful amenities. The project tracked LEED-CI Gold, then went further in sustainable design thinking by adhering to a near-vegan material standard and incorporating a circadian lighting system for the health of occupants keeping atypical work hours. The health and wellness-centric design also incorporated indoor air quality (Far UV) devices, the first installation of its kind and quantity, for the well-being of all who work in and visit the office. With “finding wonder and purpose” as the guiding principle, specified furnishings and materials support the highly creative activity within. For example, a Japanese-inspired welcome setting encourages visitors to remove their shoes, while every space within features writable glass and dry-erase surfaces.
